HGST Ultrastar He6 6TB hard disk

It may be up for debate whether HGST or Seagate has sold the world's first 6TB (6000GB) hard disk, but there's no arguing over HGST's claim to the title of being the first company to produce a hard disk containing helium, rather than air, inside its shell.
According to the company, which is a subsidiary of Western Digital, by using helium, the reduced air friction means less resistance than you'll find in a standard hard disk, allowing more headroom for increased disk speed, additional platters, and lower power consumption.
HGST Ultrastar He6 6TB hard disk reviewSince the 6TB HGST Ultrastar He6 and Seagate Enterprise disks have arrived almost simultaneously, a direct comparison is inevitable. Seagate has boosted its drive's capacity without developing friction-reducing technology though, instead relying on improved platter density for higher capacities. The comparison therefore is between technology as much as it is between products.
The only variances between the four HGST Ultrastar He6 models are in its connector - 6GB/s SATA or 6GB/s SAS, and whether or not it comes with hardware encryption. No capacities are offered besides 6TB at this stage. As with the Seagate Enterprise 6TB hard disk, the Ultrastar He6 spins at 7200RPM, but it only has 64MB cache, while Seagate has bumped its cache to 128MB.
HGST quotes a platter density of 544 Gb/sq. in, which is considerably less than Seagate's 633
Gb/sq. in. Platter density is one of the most important specifications for a hard disk, since it defines not only capacity, but performance. As the head moves across the disk to read or write data, if more information is packed into the same space, more data is read than with a disk that has a lower platter density.
With the SATA model, there's only the option of 512n sectors, while the SAS model allows for 512, 520 and 528, but not 4Kn, as with the Seagate Enterprise 6TB disk.
Another notable difference is in power consumption. Seagate quotes its 6TB drive consumes 11.27w in use, with 6.9w when idle. The Ultrastar He6 uses considerably less power though - either 7.3w or 8.8w in use depending on whether it's the SAS or SATA model, and either 5.3w or 5.7w when idle.
When it comes to price the HGST Ultrastar He6 Helium is slightly more expensive than Seagate's 6TB hard disk at most online retailers. Both drives hover around the £450 mark, although if you shop around they can be found cheaper at many retailers.
Nothing but gas?
Helium has never been used in hard disks before, and therefore, is an unknown quantity when it comes to long-term reliability, which is a crucial factor for all users, but especially enterprise and data centre customers. The Ultrastar He6 carries a 5-year warranty, and HGST states an impressive 2 million hour MTBF (mean time before failure) but as always, this figure is calculated from algorithms rather than actual testing.
There's no real way to test whether the drives are more or less reliable than traditional disks, without the benefit of long-term use and deployment.
But if there's a possibility the technology is an additional risk for IT managers, who are notorious for sticking to tried and tested products, it could end up being shunned until more information is known.

Testing

I used CrystalDiskMark, AS SSD and PCMark 08 to gauge the performance of the Ultrastar He6.
The Ultrastar He6 delivered lower sequential read and write performance than Seagate's drive in CrystalDiskMark. Read speeds were at 163 MB/s, with write speeds at 158 MB/s, which is significantly lower than Seagate's respective 223 MB/s and 217 MB/s.
With random performance the Ultrastar fell slightly short too. With 56MB/s read speeds and 55MB/s write speeds, performance was lower than the Seagate Enterprise v4 6TB hard disk, which managed 62 MB/s and 121 MB/s.
Read access times are longer too - AS SSD reported 13ms, compared with 11ms with the Seagate, but access times were twice as fast while writing, at just 2ms compared with 4.1ms with the Seagate.
In PCMark, an overall score of 3725 indicates that, despite the lower performance, the HGST Helium He6 still works very well as a main system drive, since the Seagate was only two points higher, with a score of 3727. Although the storage test showed the differences clearly, with the HGST Ultrastar He6 scoring 2890, compared with the Seagate's 3095.
Overall, there's nothing at all wrong with these results, and it's safe to say the HGST Helium He6 is a good drive, but it's beaten soundly in tests by Seagate's traditional air-filled Enterprise V4 hard disk. 

The other aspect of testing I conducted was a rough sound test, using a smartphone decibel metre. This isn't a completely accurate test, but if used to compare two devices in an identical environment, it is at least an indicator of noise levels.
I set a large file transfer going and measured the ambient noise levels on top of both the Seagate and HGST drives. The HGST was a full 5DB louder than the Seagate.

Verdict

The HGST Ultrastar He6 promises a lot, especially as it is the first hard drive to contain helium. But does it live up to that innovative design? Overall performance is adequate, but suffers slightly when compared to Seagate's competing product and while 6TB might be an attractive level of storage it does come with a high price tag.

We liked

Any 3.5-in hard drive offering 6TB of capacity is a winner. Home users can squeeze more movies, music and media onto it, and business customers can look forward to upgrading their storage capacity by at least 50%, without having to accommodate more rack space.
It's performs well too. Although I found Seagate's Enterprise v4 6TB hard disk to be faster, the HGST Helium He6 is still good in the all-important speed tests.
It also has a five-year warranty, which is much longer than you get with most consumer hard disks. Long warranties are expected of enterprise storage devices, and it's a tradition I'm very pleased to see continue.

We disliked

6TB hard drives aren't good value for money at this stage, especially these enterprise drives, which are a lot more than the average consumer hard drive. You're much better off buying multiple drives with a smaller capacity, than a single 6TB model, for now.
In use, I found the drive got quite hot, and was measurably noisier than its Seagate rival.

Final verdict

Despite the overall lower performance, I'm cautiously optimistic about HGST's approach with the HGST Helium He6. With its lower internal friction, it could lead to continued storage improvements in the near future, as soon as HGST can match it rivals' high platter density. Lower power consumption no doubt helps as well.
While other firms who are still filling disks with air might be stuck with lower capacities for longer, HGST is now poised to rush ahead of them, although for now, these benefits are yet to be fully realised.

Samsung Galaxy K zoom review

Chassis & screen
As with the previous version of this hybrid device, it's easier to think of the K zoom as a camera that thinks it's a phone rather than the other way round. As a phone it's bulky, with a large, extendible, optical lens that bulges out to 24mm in repose, and weighs a hefty 200g. It's lost the large, bulging battery grip but it's still not subtle, and not that easy to carry around, though if you're serious about your photography, and don't want to carry two devices, it's worth considering.
The 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen delivers a resolution of 1,280x720p -- not quite full HD but it should still look a little sharper than it does. It actually appears a little fuzzy, more so than you'd expect from an LCD screen with these sort of specifications. Colours too seem a bit over-saturated and less than lifelike. All this seems a bit bizarre in a camera phone that prides itself on the quality of its pictures -- the screen simply doesn't do them justice.
Software & processor
Its running Android 4.4 KitKat but as usual has some tweaks from Samsung, including a redesigned (but very long) settings menu and alphabetical view of all your apps.
Unusually, the processor is a hexa-core model -- six cores in all -- with four cores handling the day-to-day functions and two more for more intensive tasks. It's backed by 2GB of RAM too, which comes in handy for keeping things running nice and smoothly. Our AnTuTu benchmark test delivered a score of 31,822 which puts it only a little behind top-ranked phones of the moment like the LG G3OnePlus One or indeed the Galaxy S5.
Photography
And so to the camera, all 20.7 megapixels of it. That's a step up from the S4 Zoom's 16 megapixels and similar-sounding specifications to Sony's Xperia Z2. The difference of course is the optical lens, which is capable of zooming in much more efficiently than a standard digital zoom, which loses resolution the more you use it. It extends to 240mm at full stretch and offers 10x magnification -- you can also go up to 20x magnification using digital processing.
It can take pictures at a maximum resolution of 5,248x3,936 pixels and shoot video at an impressive full HD 1080p at 60fps. Picture quality is pretty good, but without the zoom, you could say that the Sony Xperia Z2, for instance, delivers equally good results. Use the zoom though, and it's instantly head and shoulders above its digital zoom rivals, with pics holding their sharpness even at full zoom.
Built-in camera apps include Studio, which lets you edit your pics and create collages. There's also Pro Suggest Market, which offers pre-set filters and options for your snapper. It comes with a reasonable 8GB of memory on board but you can add up to 64GB via microSD card, with the slot living under a cover on the side. Battery life was a disappointment however, and we found we barely got a full day of steady use out of it.
Conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy K zoom moves the concept on from its last incarnation with 4G connectivity and a beefed up camera spec, though it's now lost the bulge grip. It's still very much a low to midrange digital camera masquerading as a mid- to high-end mobile phone, but if you need a phone with a high-quality optical zoom, it doesn't have much competition at the moment.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha preview: First look

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is a surprising change in the Samsung product strategy. It certainly has many of the Galaxy S5 key selling features, while staking on more premium material such as aluminum. But it's not another flagship, no, it's rather an offshoot of the Galaxy family tree - something that the Galaxy S5 mini could have been but is not. A strange bird, indeed
.
Samsung Galaxy AlphaThat certainly doesn't mean we don't like it. Just on the contrary. The Samsung Galaxy Alpha presents a nice departure from the Galaxy S5 design language. The sides are machined out of aluminum, while the back no longer imitates faux leather.
The Galaxy Alpha has a smaller screen than the S5 to make it much more pocketable and also, undoubtedly, to allow it to compete with the iPhone 6 directly.
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is surprisingly light, it feels sturdy and the back looks like it could take a lot of beating before it gets seriously scratched. The latter benefit is certainly something we've missed in high-end smartphones that we've seen lately.
Our biggest regrets in the specs department are the lack of water-proofing and the lack of a microSD card slot.

Design and build quality

Samsung's shift in design has to be felt to be believed. No, really, on the outside the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is very similar to the Galaxy S5 mini. A keen eye will notice that the bezels above and below the screen are smaller, accommodating the bigger screen. The Alpha is also considerably thinner, if that's not obvious by first look.
Of course, the major upgrade to Samsung's design language here is the metal chassis. The sides of the phone are exposed metal while the front and back are covered in glass and plastic, not unlike Apple's iPhone 4 / 4s and Sony's Xperias.
The Galaxy Alpha will inevitably draw comparisons with the iPhone - the flat metal sides are segmented by thin lines of plastic and look so familiar. Samsung's design features flared corners which improve handling a bit by preventing your fingers from slipping off the rounded corner. They also remind us a bit of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active.
The back of the phone is plastic, with the dotted pattern of perforated leather similar to the Galaxy S5 though here the pattern is finer and not resembling leather so much.
While the plastic isn't the most premium material, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha impresses with a mere 6.7mm thickness. It's the slimmest Galaxy device to date though not the slimmest smartphone in general.
The feeling of compactness is helped by the weight of 115g, few 4.7" phones weigh this little. The Galaxy Alpha feels tiny compared to the current crop of 5" flagships.
The Galaxy Alpha also compares favorably against iPhone 5s, which measures 7.6mm thick and weighs 113g. The iPhone 6 is expected to be bigger and thinner than its predecessor but it remains to be seen if Apple can keep the weight down. And it's the upcoming iPhone that Samsung has in its sights, not the 5s.
We can only suppose that the magic behing this reduced weight is the reduced battery capacity, which in this case amounts to only 1,860mAh. Indeed, the battery is removable, but it's still a measly capacity.
The front is made of glass though Samsung has not revealed yet whether it's the usual Gorilla Glass or not. Under the glass is a plastic that matches the back in terms of color and the fine dotted pattern. The Galaxy Alpha will be available in Charcoal Black, Sleek Silver, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold and Scuba Blue.
The front of the device features an earpiece, the usual sensor array (proximity, ambient light and Air Gesture) and a notification LED. There's also a 2MP/1080p camera above the screen. Nothing has changed below the screen either, a hardware Home key is flanked by capacitive App switcher and Back keys.
The Home key houses a hidden fingerprint reader, which can be used to lock the phone and authorize transactions (it's PayPay-certified). It also enables Private mode, which gives you access to a secure part of the storage where you can keep sensitive data and photos.
The sensorama tour continues with a heart rate monitor on the back. It's placed next to the camera and is grouped with the LED flash in a small black segment amidst the colored plastic.
The camera itself protrudes slightly from the back of the phone, extending past the 6.7mm thickness. It has 12MP resolution and can record 2160p video, more on that later.
The back panel can be removed to expose the 1,860mAh battery. It's user-replaceable but is relatively small even for a phone this size. We guess sacrificing battery capacity is part of how Samsung got the Galaxy Alpha down to this thickness and weight. Ultra Power Saving Mode is available for when battery charge gets too close to 0% for comfort.
Anyway, under the back cover you'll find a nanoSIM card slot but no microSD. The phone comes with 32GB of storage as default and that's all you're getting (there's no 64GB version announced yet).
The bottom of the phone features a microUSB 2.0 port, a microphone and the grill of the loudspeaker. Positioning the loudspeaker here means it won't get muffled regardless of how you put the phone down (face up or face down) but is bound to draw even more comparisons with the iPhone.
The metal sides of the phone host one hardware control each - the Power button on the right and the Volume rocker on the left. Both are made of metal and are slightly too thin for our liking, it makes pressing the keys slightly more difficult.
Among the sensors packed inside the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is a Hall sensor, normally used to detect the opening and closing of covers. Samsung hasn't announced any dedicated Alpha covers yet but it would be interesting to see if they'll have a premium feel to them compared to regular S Covers. Note that there doesn't seem to be a barometer or humidity sensor on board.

Connectivity

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha comes loaded with wireless connectivity features. It starts with LTE Cat. 6 (up to 300Mpbs down, 50Mbps up) to match what the latest Snapdragon 805 can offer. Regular 2G and 3G connectivity is of course supported, too.
Local connectivity is no slower, the phone packs a MIMO (2x2) antenna setup for dual-channel connectivity. That's different from dual-band (which the Alpha also has), it means that it can use 80MHz of the Wi-Fi spectrum instead of the usual 40MHz for enhanced speed. Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac standards are supported.
Other local connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.0 LE and ANT+, both of which are low-power and can be used to connect with wireless sports accessories (to be used with the S Health app or third-party apps). NFC rounds off the wireless connectivity section.
The Galaxy Alpha relies on a standard microUSB 2.0 port for charging and wired data connectivity. USB 3.0 ports are rare and require a fairly large adapter. What we do miss here is wired TV out either via MHL or SlimPort.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha performance

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is the first device with Exynos 5 Octa 5430 that we've tested. The chipset features a big.LITTLE processor with four Cortex-A16 cores and four Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.8GHz and 1.3GHz respectively. All eight can run simultaneously so we can expect great multi-core performance.
The chipset also packs a hexa-core Mali-T628 MP6 GPU, the latest currently available Mali design. Processor and RAM share 2GB of RAM.
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha comes with Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box. Note that Samsung disables the ART runtime in its TouchWiz software, that's the faster optional runtime that debuted with KitKat and will be made default in Android L. An increasing number of apps is becoming compatible with ART.
With technical specifications out of the way, let's pit the Galaxy Alpha against flagships and high-profile minis. Of the minis only the Xperia Z1 Compact has a chance of competing here, the others are powered by mid-range Snapdragon 400 chipsets.
We start off with the Basemark suite of cheat detection software. We're pleased to report that Samsung hasn't gone back to benchmark shenanigans. The Basemark tests are good for comparing performance, too.
Basemark OS II leans on the CPU and puts the Galaxy Alpha within spitting distance of the LG G3. The breakdown shows great single-core performance and unmatched multi-core performance (all 8 cores working at once does make a difference).

Samsung Galaxy Alpha camera quality

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha comes with a 12MP camera. Samsung hasn't had a 12MP shooter in its lineup for ages so the Alpha isn't just borrowing the camera of another Galaxy. The image sensor has 16:9 aspect ratio, meaning it shoots widescreen photos natively.
The interface has been lifted directly from the Galaxy S5. The right column holds the essential keys - still and video shutter keys, the Mode button and the gallery shortcut. The left column has the front/back camera toggle, selective focus, HDR and settings shortcut.
The middle two shortcuts are customizable, the top and bottom ones are not. The Mode button is the other place you can quickly access shooting modes, including Panorama, Shot & more, Virtual tour, Dual Camera and Beauty face.
Shot & more combines Best photo, Best face, Drama shot, Eraser and Panning shot. Dual Camera takes a photo with both front and back cameras simultaneously.
Virtual tour shot is similar to panoramas except you can move forward, turn left or right, move some more. Selective Focus takes two shots and processes them so you can photograph a close-up subject and blur the background or blur the object and keep the background in focus. The third option is everything in focus, here's how those options look.

Video camera

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha joins the elite club of 2160p shooters. It can also capture 1080p video at both 30fps and 60fps and slow motion is available at 720p resolution. Note that the slowest option (8x) drops the framerate of the resulting video to 15fps, use 4x if you want to keep it at 30fps.
For 2160p videos the Alpha camera records at 48Mbps bitrate, matching the Galaxy S5. Interestingly, audio recording is done at 256Kbps, double the bitrate the S5 uses and matching the venerable Nokia Lumia 1020.
Total bitrates go down from there - 28Mbps for 1080p@60fps and 17Mbps for 1080p@30fps. The audio bitrate remains unchanged.
An important thing to note is that switching to 2160p video mode puts an upper limit on video length - 4 minutes (instead of the usual 5) - and disables certain features like Dual Camera, HDR, video effects, taking photos during video capture and video effects.

First impressions

The classic rivalry has been between the Galaxy S and the iPhone but the Galaxy S also has to fight off Android flagships too. Now Samsung has introduced a phone to specifically battle the upcoming iPhone but a quick glimpse at it reveals it may pose a serious competition to the Xperia Z1 Compact, too (or whatever mini phone Sony comes up with this fall.
The exposed metal on the sides of the Galaxy Alpha gives the phone a sense or rigidity that plastic never quite manages. Even so we struggle a bit to call the Alpha a premium device - the plastic on the back and the design of the front are very much standard Galaxy affair, from mid-range to flagship.
Samsung's ubiquitous design is hurting the Alpha a bit, you have to tell the uninitiated that this isn't just another Galaxy S mini. This was perhaps a perfect opportunity for the South Korean giant to shakeup its design language.
That said, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha has proper flagship specs - the chipset is a little speed devil and the 12MP camera looks very promising. The phone also brings blazing fast connectivity, the trendy fingerprint reader and a heart rate monitor to boot.
The only place where the Alpha falters seriously in terms of specifications is the measly battery capacity and the lack of a microSD slot. We feel that engaging the Ultra Power Saving Mode might become a way of life for Alpha owners though.
We finally got what many were asking for - a metal Galaxy flagship. It's metal only on the sides but that worked well enough for iPhones, Xperias and Lumias. Whether the Galaxy Alpha can rise above its worn out looks (both hardware and TouchWiz software) and the screen/battery numbers is a question better left for the review.

iPhone weighs 112g and whereas Samsung is 145g, that means Samsung heavier than iPhone. Coming to the size, Samsung measures 73x142x8.1mm and iPhone measures 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm, which means iPhone is thinner.

Build

Samsung is made from soft plastic, same material is being used in rear casing. iPhone 5S is made of aluminium back and sides that gives a classy look. Galaxy S5 lacks the polish and tough materials that would be better than Apple’s device built.

Sensors

In the Samsung Smartphone family, Galaxy S5 is the first one to feature fingerprint sensor for security purposes. It requires a swipe across the screen to unlock it. Apple has features the same feature of finger press that unlocks the device with a touch. Samsung has an additional feature that reads heart rate, which will be useful for use in fitness applications.

Camera

Here Samsung bangs on stage with 16 megapixel camera along with 4K video recording capability. iPhone 5S has 8 megapixels camera which doesn’t match the comparison in any terms. Coming to front camera S5 has 2.1 megapixels camera and 5S has 1.2 megapixels. That’s not quite compatible right?
Finally, these two devices always had split opinions, iPhone is being drive to be as a status symbol and Samsung is much for its functionality. So it is always fair enough to know basic need and then choose accordingly. But both the devices stand up to be the best always.
